Our History

The Fleischer Foundation works to empower children from the Mukuru Kwa Njenga slum of Nairobi, Kenya through education and mentorship. We are a not-for-profit (NFP) organization that is incorporated in Kenya and in the United States as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

Our Founder, Stephen Fleischer, was born and raised in New York City. After his undergraduate studies at Loyola University Maryland, he took a year to volunteer as a teacher at a Marianist elementary school in a slum of Nairobi. While at the school, he met a student from his class who, like every other member of the class, could not afford to go to high school. In this case, however, the 14 year old girl was soon to be married off to a 70 year old man in exchange for a dowry payment. This situation devastated Stephen, and he offered to pay her high school fees from his own pocket. Soon after, more and more donors and family members wanted to help children in similar situations. This overwhelming support led to the incorporation of The Fleischer Foundation.

Through the help of many generous donors, a supportive board of directors, and a capable team both in Kenya and in the United States, we have managed to support dozens of students to join secondary school and university. These are kids who would otherwise be left behind due to extreme poverty. We believe that education is the key to eradicating poverty, and as such, are using education and mentorship to break the cycle of poverty one child at a time.

The Fleischer Foundation currently has four main Programs:
